“In order to write a story- storytelling must come first.”
Voice
Two types of voices–we all have both. The inner voice and external voice–as a writer the development of style starts the moment words flow from the brain, through the fingers and onto paper. Through the duration of words turning from sentences to paragraphs to an entire novel.
It is important to study different authors. Exploring different styles will aid in creating and forming a stronger voice. Example, Edgar Allen Poe sets up his entire story in the first paragraph. Emily Dickerson who style and voice is set off by a dash. Lorrie Morgan, uses second person as her main point of view. Modern day greatness is found in Stephen King’s narration. His characterization and development of each book is impeccable- brilliant. Jodi Picolut style is very compelling but she also uses characterization as a tool to lure the reader in.
This weeks challenge is to share your own examples of compelling voices. If you have any authors you’d like share email me and I will post them here.
